Hi, I’m Edward Reeves and am certainly the oldest postgraduate student in the group. I even have children who are older than all the other students. I am part-time and a theory student, as you will have noticed, which puts me in a minority, here. Now in my second year, I thought I should write something about my experiences so far.
With exams and lectures out of the way I am beginning to enjoy myself, although it is difficult to immerse oneself in the ambience of the place when you are only present for one day per week – I commute from Worcester. Having spent most of my career, to date, as a teacher of Mathematics, it has taken most of my first year to come to terms with the mathematics of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. I must say I am feeling much happier about the subject than I was when I started. Having spent most of my time reading about general relativity, which I find absolutely riveting, I am now working of an aspect of gravity in cosmology. Eventually I should like to do some research into gravity and the causes of gravity.
I am most impressed with the Particle Physics Group and the way that it is run. I have not come across one prima donna yet; everyone is so helpful. It is a privilege to find oneself among such wonderful postgraduate students and staff. If you are an undergraduate looking for a postgraduate placement in particle physics, this is the place to be.
