PhD topic: Diagnostics with Higher Order Modes in Superconducting Accelerating Cavities
- An electron beam entering a cavity excites electromagnetic resonances, which if left unchecked can dilute the beam quality or
can result in a beam break up instability within the superconducting (SC) cavities at XFEL/FLASH or the ILC. These higher order
modes (HOM) deflect the beam transversely. It is important to ensure these HOMs are well-suppressed and their effect on the
beam is minimized by aligning the beam to the electrical centre of the cavity. On the other hand, the beam-excited fields are
radiated to HOM ports and enable the beam position within the cavity to be remotely determined in an accurate manner. It is
planned to build on-line monitors to evaluate these fields in the SC accelerating cavities of XFEL and FLASH. The project is partly
supported by EuCARD WP10.5.
